As the MLA for Langley-Willowbrook and a member of the Conservative Party of BC, I am deeply concerned about the escalating homelessness and mental health crisis in our community. It’s a multifaceted problem that not only affects the individuals experiencing it but also impacts the entire community’s well-being.

The Current Situation in Langley

In recent years, we have witnessed a troubling rise in homelessness across British Columbia, and Langley is no exception. The statistics are alarming, and the visible impact of this crisis is evident in our streets and parks. Many individuals facing homelessness struggle with addiction and mental health issues, creating a cycle that is difficult to break without comprehensive support systems.

Rising Numbers: Reports indicate a significant increase in individuals experiencing homelessness in Langley, with many living in precarious conditions. This crisis is exacerbated by the lack of accessible mental health services and addiction support.

Community Impact: The presence of homelessness affects public safety, local businesses, and community morale. It is crucial that we address this issue not only for the sake of those directly affected but also for the health of our community as a whole.

The Role of the NDP Government

The NDP government has made numerous promises to tackle homelessness and improve mental health services. However, many of these commitments have not been fulfilled, leaving our most vulnerable citizens without the support they desperately need.

Unmet Promises: Despite assurances of increased funding for mental health and addiction services, there remains a significant gap in resources. The lack of follow-through on these promises leaves individuals without the help they require to regain stability.

Policy Shortcomings: The current approach has not effectively addressed the root causes of homelessness. A more integrated strategy that combines housing, mental health care, and addiction support is necessary for meaningful change.
